For those people who love the outdoors and love a challenge even more, rock climbing can prove to be the best sport of your life. Rock climbing is extremely challenging but the rewards are unimaginable. Imagine yourself strong, fit and confident, viewing the scenery from hundreds of feet off the ground. The views are breathtaking and the feeling of accomplishment is absolutely amazing.
Rock climbing can be done indoors or outdoors. For the beginner, it is a good idea to learn your skills and build your confidence indoors. This is a safer way to climb and gyms the provide this require you to undergo a quick lesson before heading to the wall. They will teach you how to properly tie and secure your harness, rope and other equipment and will also show you the necessary skills to be a good climber or belayer (the partner on the ground). Once you head to the wall, you will truly understand how challenging this sport is. You will realize it even further as you take the next few days to recover from the muscle soreness. But it is totally worth it.
While to watch a rock climber scaling the side of a mountain, it appears that they use their arms to propel them upwards, this is not true. In actuality, the sport of rock climbing is approximately 75% legs and only 25% arms. Your arms are there mostly to hold you steady and close to the rock face. Your legs will be the main source of strength and will push you upwards. This should be great news for those of us who have limited upper body strength, but are quite powerful below the waist. You don’t have to be a body builder in order to climb, in fact the leaner your muscle, the easier a time you will have. The most important rule or skill of rock climbing, is to always have 3 points touching the wall. This can be both feet and a hand or both hands and a foot. However, it is much easier to balance on 3 points than it is on 2. This will keep you safer and allow you to climb for a longer period of time before fatigue sets in.
Once you head outdoors, there are three main types of climbing. You should be familiar with all of these before you begin. These include Top Roping, Lead Climbing and Bouldering, all of which should be done with a partner. The most popular type is lead climbing. This involves a rope which is secured to the top of the rock or mountain, then fed through a pulley system and attached to the climbers harness. A belayer will hold the bottom of the rope and feed the climber slack as he or she needs it. The next type, Lead Climbing requires a more advanced climber to scout out the route and clip the rope into place as they go. This is more difficult for the first climber. Both of these types allow the climber to rest by putting their weight into the harness and relying on the rope for support. The third type of climbing, Bouldering, does not allow for this. Bouldering is climbing on a much smaller rock formation and does not utilize and equipment (save for a helmet). Since the distance to the ground is much less then during a normal climb, the only safety precaution may be a bouldering mat which is kept on the ground in case

Sport climbing is one type of rock climbing that can be fun for many people, at all skill levels. This discipline of climbing involves heavy-duty protection, by utilizing bolts and anchors that will attach a climber to the rock. This is usually considered the safest type of rock climbing, and is often the most conventional type. It only requires basic equipment, so it’s easy to begin sport climbing, and can be exceptionally fun.
Sport climbing will usually take place in climbing centers that have rock climbing walls erected for your own recreational fun. These can be both inside and outside. These places are easy to access, reasonably low in price, and a fun activity to do with a ton of friends.
Since the anchors and bolts are already in the rock, there is no need for the climber to bring protection with him. This means the climber is lighter weight and is more able to push his limits. In addition to the pre-existing protection, the potential for failure of the protection is very small. This makes it less of a threat to take a fall while sport climbing. Again, knowing that all this protection is surrounding you, allows a climber to really push his limits.
Another advantage of sport climbing is that it is cheaper than other forms of rock climbing. Because it requires so much less equipment, it is relatively inexpensive to begin. Despite it being a relatively young type of climbing, it is quickly growing in popularity because of its many advantages.

If you have never tried indoor rock climbing, now is the time. Indoor rock climbing can make an excellent training ground for people who want to move onto outdoor rock climbing, or it can just be an excellent sport on its own. Not only will you build muscle while rock climbing, you will also lose weight quickly and start to feel great about yourself. There is nothing better than the feeling of accomplishment you will get when you reach the top of your climb.
Rock climbing has evolved significantly since 1964 when a Phys Ed professor from the United Kingdom débuted the first version. The original climbing walls were made of rocks inserted into a wall in a corridor. Now, all types of materials are being used, creating safer more varied climbing walls. Plywood walls with resin foot and hand holds are among the most popular.
Indoor climbing is popular for a few reasons. One of them is a more controlled and safer environment for beginners and those looking to take just a few less risks when climbing. Another reason, is the dependability. In climates where it rains frequently and climbers are often subjected to extreme weather, indoor rock climbing can be a great way around this. It is dangerous to climb in wet or windy conditions as you will have less traction and less ability to hold onto the wall. Indoor climbing solves this problem.
There is quite a bit of equipment that is required to stay safe and participate in indoor rock climbing. When you are just starting out, it is wise to rent your equipment from whatever gym you choose to climb at. Most gyms have packages that shouldn’t cost you too much more than the climbing pass for the day. If you have been climbing for awhile or have the money to spend up front to get your own gear, you should look into purchasing several things. The most important of these is climbing shoes. There are different types of climbing shoes (the rubber, lacing materials and shape differ) depending on what type of climbing you will be doing, and what type of rocks are used in the walls. Next, you should look for your harness. Most climbers use a sitting harness which you step into and is worn like a diaper. This allows you to sit back and take a break when necessary and lean back when belaying down the wall. Climbing robes and belay devices are necessary for the actual climb and will help propel you up and then down the wall. Chalk bags are used to keep the climbers hands dry, very important when you are relying on them to keep you firmly attached to a wall. Helmets are another important safety feature which can keep your head safe in case of a fall or an accident.
There are several other pieces of equipment that you can buy for indoor rock climbing, however this should get you started. Please keep in mind, if you are going to climb with a child, they will need a separate harness because of their small size. Always be safe and you will have a great time!
